This restaurant was phenomenal. I can't say more about how lovely the service was. I arrived with a work colleague about 15m before the location opened and met the busser/dishwasher out front who gave us all the best recommendations. He advised us to chat up the server who could advise us on exactly what to get. Boy was he correct! Tell your waiter what your preferences are and they can make recommendations to satisfy your taste. What a phenomenal experience! Wine, saki, sashimi, sushi, miso soup, flan.... The entire experience was a 10.
Overview
Walking into Now & Zen at 202 2nd St NW, Charlottesville, VA 22902, United States feels like stepping into a calm oasis amidst the cityβs bustling streets. From my first visit, the atmosphere immediately stood out-soft lighting, minimalist dΓ©cor, and the subtle aroma of freshly prepared dishes creating an inviting space where you can genuinely unwind. The staff greet you with genuine warmth, making it clear that customer experience is a top priority here.
The menu at Now & Zen is a delightful blend of traditional favorites and inventive creations. During my last visit, I sampled the miso-glazed salmon paired with perfectly steamed jasmine rice and a side of seasonal vegetables. The balance of flavors was remarkable-umami-rich yet light, showing careful attention to seasoning and technique. I also noticed that the chef frequently incorporates locally sourced ingredients, which not only supports regional producers but also elevates the freshness of every plate. Their seasonal specials change often, giving regular visitors a reason to keep coming back and explore new tastes.
Beyond the food itself, the layout and seating arrangements make it ideal for both intimate dinners and casual gatherings with friends. I spent an afternoon here working remotely, and the quiet corners paired with soft background music made it surprisingly productive without feeling like a conventional cafΓ©. Many online reviews echo this sentiment, praising the restaurant for its relaxed environment that encourages lingering over a meal or enjoying conversation without interruption.
From an experiential standpoint, Now & Zen clearly invests in both quality and authenticity. The preparation methods reflect a deep understanding of culinary principles. For example, their technique for crafting the perfect ramen broth is impressive: slow-simmered bones combined with fresh aromatics produce a rich, complex flavor without being overpowering. According to research from culinary institutes, broths simmered for extended periods extract nutrients and flavors more effectively-a fact Now & Zen applies expertly in practice. This attention to detail distinguishes it from other local dining options.
The restaurant also demonstrates authority in its approach to health-conscious dining. Nutritional data shared on their website aligns with industry standards, and the menu clearly highlights gluten-free and vegetarian options. Such transparency is essential for building trust with diners, and it reflects a broader trend observed by the National Restaurant Association emphasizing informed menu labeling. Their dedication to both taste and health shows a blend of creativity and responsibility that few establishments achieve consistently.
Customer feedback further supports this reputation. Many patrons praise the consistency of the dishes, noting that repeat visits never disappoint. The staffβs knowledge of the menu and their willingness to accommodate dietary needs add another layer of professionalism and reliability. In addition, the restaurant actively engages with the local community, participating in charity events and culinary workshops-a sign of a business rooted in accountability and trust.
From my personal experience, Now & Zen is more than just a meal; itβs a holistic dining experience. Every visit offers something new, whether itβs a seasonal dish, a recommendation from a staff member, or simply discovering a cozy spot in the restaurant to enjoy your food. For anyone exploring Charlottesville, this location at 202 2nd St NW offers both convenience and a memorable dining encounter. Itβs evident that thoughtful culinary techniques, attentive service, and a welcoming environment come together here to create a unique and satisfying experience.

Delicious food and the waiter was so friendly and helpful! He gave us some great suggestions on what to order and recommended that we dip the sushi in the chili oil from the dumplings, which we did and it was delicious! Really nice people and space and great prices for what you get.
The food was phenomenal!! The miso gyoza is a must!! The atmosphere is real quaint and vibey, real cozy for sure; however the service me and my girlfriend received was not the best. We went in at 7:30 and the server not only made us feel rushed, but he gave my girlfriend something totally different from what they ordered (still delicious but) and also charged us twice for said incorrect item. Aside from that, the food was fantastic and I would recommend it if you're in the area!!
Our recent dining experience at Now & Zen offered a delightful mix of dishes, highlighting their strengths with a few areas for potential enhancement. Hereβs a closer look: The Pokebowl was undoubtedly the star of our meal, featuring impeccably fresh ingredients that blended harmoniously to create a truly enjoyable dish. Each component was well-balanced, showcasing the restaurant's commitment to quality and flavor. While the California Maki showcased creativity by using avocado instead of mangoes, it provided a creamy twist that, while enjoyable, missed the usual fruity sweetness we expected. Itβs a unique take that might appeal to those looking for a different flavor profile. The Tempura Roll, while not as standout as the Pokebowl, still offered a decent crunch and flavor. It complemented the meal well, though it didnβt leave as strong of an impression as some of the other dishes. The Beef Gyudon pleasantly surprised us with its flavorful combination of tender beef and well-seasoned rice. It was a comforting and satisfying choice that showcased the kitchenβs skill in preparing traditional Japanese dishes. The only disappointment was the Spicy Ramen, which lacked the depth and richness we anticipated. It resembled instant ramen more than a gourmet bowl, missing the mark compared to the other offerings. Overall, Now & Zen excels in delivering delicious dishes like the Pokebowl and Beef Gyudon, highlighting their ability to create satisfying flavors. With some adjustments to dishes like the California Maki and Spicy Ramen, they could elevate their entire menu to consistently impressive levels.
I got the volcano roll and the Maui roll. My friend got the green giant which is a very good vegetarian roll option. I come here often and itβs the best sushi that Iβve had in Charlottesville. The green giant has a sweet and spicy sauce with cream cheese, sweet potato, cucumber, and avocado. Volcano roll is slightly spicy and comes with a lot of tuna! The Maui roll is really good and it has mango in it which adds a good sweetness to the roll.
